Allow me to introduce myself and my wife, Norman and Cindy Shipp. We are Coeur d'Alene, Idaho residents and are in our early fifties. It's not so simple to bring myself to convey our personal story, and let go of my pride by asking for help. I know the time has come though, to plead with someone, somewhere, somehow. It is only our dire situation that has brought us to this point in time. My wife Cindy has spent 17 years as an RN, always helping and taking care of others (while raising four children). She's the greatest!!
Please bear with me and I'll try my best to give the shortest version of our true story. Cindy got in a car wreck (thru no fault of her own) in 1994 in Oregon, on the way to her job as an RN. As a result of the car accident, she sustained a post-traumatic syrinix/syringomyelia. SM is a chronic spinal disorder in which cerebrospinal fluid enters the spinal cord, forming a cavity commonly known as a syrinx. Symptoms include: headaches, chronic pain, muscle weakness, motor impairment, Osteoporosis, scoliosis, loss of sensitivity to hot and cold, numbness in hands and feet, loss of bowel and bladder control, and paralysis or quadriplegia.
Cindy also suffers from Autonomic Dysreflexia. AD is a complication of spinal cord injury. In AD, an individual's blood pressure may rise to dangerous levels and if not treated can lead to stroke and possibly death. It is considered a medical emergency. The list of "to do's" for first aid is long and not the easiest.
Although she shows a lot of courage and determination, from her operation in Boise until today, she also bravely battles Arnold Chiari, Fibromyalgia, Asthma, and Sjogrens Syndrome. I could go into detail with each of these but my page isn't long enough. Any of these can be looked at via the internet. Needless to say, she has close to ten doctors. We have traveled to San Diego, Seattle, Portland, and Denver for answers to our prayers, so that one day she can be without so much pain, free up her mobility, and function normally again.
Her health problems requires both of us to be confined to our house most of the time. I have to make split second decisions on how to keep her alive, until I can either drive her to the ER or have the ambulance crew come help (and then I have to explain to them in detail ASAP).
So therefore, I can't go back to a regular job and still be here 24/7 to protect her. Hence, we will eventually lose our home to foreclosure. Our love for each other is solid and our faith in Jesus Christ steadfast. I will always be there for her no matter what obstacles are in our path.
Can you or your organization aid us? Bottom line is we need money to formulate a plan to perhaps move to a state that pays a spouse to take care of another spouse, like Oregon. This sounds easy on paper, but to pack, look for a place, move, unpack, find a whole new group of doctors, clinics, hospitals, etc., takes a lot of time and effort and MONEY.
It's one thing to see her in pain, but she shouldn't have to worry about keeping the roof over her head too. My health isn't the best either (floaters in my eyes, neuropathy in my feet, and a long history of back injuries). I am wearing out very quickly. If we don't get some help soon, I fear we will be in no-man's land.
Thank-you for your time in reading this plea...and keep us in your prayers.
Norman and Cindy Shipp
